What is a Cell? A cell is the basic structural and functional unit of life. All living organisms are made up of cells. Some organisms have only one cell, while others have many cells working together. Cells are often called the building blocks of life because they form the body of living organisms and help perform important life processes. Why Are Cells Important?  Cells are important because they carry out essential activities needed for life. These activities include: growth, respiration, nutrition, reproduction, and removal of waste. Without cells, life cannot exist. Discovery of the Cell The cell was first discovered by Robert Hooke in 1665 while observing a thin slice of cork through a microscope. He noticed small box-like structures and called them cells.
