What is a Cell?

A cell is the basic structural and functional unit of life.

All living organisms are made up of cells. Some organisms have only one cell, while others have many cells working together.

Cells are often called the building blocks of life because they form the body of living organisms and help perform important life processes.

Why Are Cells Important? 

Cells are important because they carry out essential activities needed for life.

These activities include:

growth,

respiration,

nutrition,

reproduction,

and removal of waste.

Without cells, life cannot exist.

Discovery of the Cell

The cell was first discovered by Robert Hooke in 1665 while observing a thin slice of cork through a microscope.

He noticed small box-like structures and called them cells.

Later, scientists studied cells in more detail and developed the cell theory.

Types of Cells 

There are two common types of cells:

Plant Cell

Plant cells are found in plants.  

They usually have:

cell wall,

cell membrane,

nucleus,

chloroplast,

and a large vacuole.

Animal Cell

Animal cells are found in animals.

They have:

cell membrane,

cytoplasm,

nucleus,

and smaller vacuoles.

Animal cells do not have a cell wall.

Important Parts of a Cell

1. Cell Membrane 

The cell membrane forms the outer covering of the cell.

Its function is to:

protect the cell,

and control the movement of substances in and out.

2. Cytoplasm 

Cytoplasm is the jelly-like substance inside the cell.

It contains cell organelles and supports important activities of the cell.

3. Nucleus 

The nucleus is called the control centre of the cell.

It:

controls cell activities,

stores genetic material,

and helps in growth and reproduction.
